## What OLM is

OLM (Open Learning Map) is a structural framework for designing learning experiences. It is **not a curriculum**. It defines *how* learning is organized — the routines learners do, the artifacts they produce, the evidence those artifacts represent, the patterns those routines form, the constraints under which they operate — without prescribing *what* is taught.

Programs are described in a **governed vocabulary**. Every routine, artifact, evidence type, pattern, constraint, and Human Development Dimension (HDD) used in a program must come from the canonical registry. New vocabulary is not introduced ad hoc.

OLM is designed to be legible to both humans and AI systems. The constraints below are guardrails, not suggestions.

**Pending — do not use in generated content:** `hdd.collective_efficacy`, `hdd.intrinsic_motivation`, `hdd.psychological_safety`. These appear in the HDD framework document as recognized human capacities but are not yet assigned canonical pipeline IDs. If a brief describes one of these concepts, either map it to a related canonical HDD (`hdd.collaboration` is the closest approximation for collective efficacy; `hdd.curiosity` or `hdd.agency` for intrinsic motivation; `hdd.belonging` for psychological safety), or omit it from `hdd_alignment` and note the gap in a `notes` field.

A program packet consists of layered documents. Each layer has a specific job. Layers depend only on the layer immediately above them.

### Core Mapping — required fields

- `program_id` (slug, lowercase, underscored)
- `title`
- `embedding_mode` — one of `standalone`, `embeddable`, `contextual`
- `duration` — total program time
- `age_range`
- `program_intent` — plain language, non-claiming, 1–3 sentences
- `patterns` — IDs from registry
- `routines` — IDs from registry
- `artifacts` — IDs from registry, **each with durability classification**
- `evidence` — IDs from registry
- `constraints` — IDs from registry, with values
- `hdd_alignment` — IDs from registry (optional)

Core Mapping must NOT contain: tools, videos, lesson scripts, materials lists, timing.

### Artifact durability

Every declared artifact must include one of:
- `durable` — physical object or digital file that persists
- `perishable` — exists briefly then is gone (food, sandcastles)
- `requires_documentation` — must be photographed or recorded to persist

### Playbook

Delivery model. Pedagogy, educator guidance, group configuration, adaptation rules, safety assumptions. May support multiple programs in the same domain. Must not redefine routines, artifacts, or evidence.

Playbook field `rituals_referenced` may contain only **named OLM Ritual Library entries** (Morning Circle, Daily Stand-Up, Closing Circle, Demo Day, etc.) or be empty `[]`. Free-text descriptions of techniques are not valid entries.

### Runbook and Prep Pack are internal

Educators never see them as separate documents. They are generation stages that feed the **Educator Brief**.

## Critical validation rules

**Canonical IDs:**
- Every ID in any field must exist in the registry above.
- No new IDs may be introduced.
- Deprecated IDs must not be used.
- Pending IDs must not be used.

**Evidence:**
- If any artifact is declared, `evidence.artifact_presence` must be included.
- `evidence.routine_completion` is supporting evidence only — never primary.

**HDDs:**
- HDDs are non-claimable. Never scored, validated, or attached to specific routines as outcomes.
- HDDs go in `hdd_alignment` as design intent only.

**Pattern markers:**
- `pattern.opening`, `pattern.middle`, `pattern.closing` are section headers. Routines following each marker belong to that section.
- `pattern.closing` is not a session terminator. Closing routines (`routine.reflect`, `routine.retrospective`) go **after** `pattern.closing`, not before it.
- Each pattern section must contain at least one timed routine.

**Routine selection — common errors to avoid:**
- `routine.discuss` is group verbal exchange (learners talking to each other). `routine.reflect` is individual written or silent reflection. A closing written reflection is always `routine.reflect`.
- `routine.explore_tool` is low-stakes, goal-free familiarization with a tool. Once a goal is added, it becomes `routine.hands_on_activity` or `routine.apply_cad_feature`.

**Artifact selection — common errors to avoid:**
- `artifact.portfolio_entry` = the primary written creative or intellectual output (a story, essay, poem — the writing IS the task).
- `artifact.reflection_log` = metacognitive reflection on the experience (writing ABOUT the task).
- Decision rule: if the writing IS the task → `portfolio_entry`. If it is ABOUT the task → `reflection_log`.

**Educator-facing language:**
- Canonical OLM IDs (`routine.*`, `artifact.*`, etc.) must not appear in educator-facing documents (Educator Brief, Parent Brief) or in plain-language note fields.
- Use plain language in any field that will be read by an educator or parent.

## Output format

Return Core Mappings and Playbooks as YAML by default unless the user requests another format. Keep IDs in fenced code style or as bare tokens — never in prose.

## When in doubt

- Prefer fewer IDs that genuinely fit over many that loosely fit.
- If a brief describes something the canonical vocabulary can't capture, note the gap in a `notes` field — do not invent a new ID.
- If an artifact wouldn't actually be produced by learners in this program, do not declare it.
- A program is reusable structure. An activity is a one-time task. If the brief is really an activity, say so rather than dressing it up.

You are generating a draft for human review, not a finished publication. Be accurate about what the brief contains and honest about what it leaves ambiguous.
